Marvel Pull List - Week of 08/04

All right!  Awesome!  Big shout out to The Nerd Nest and The Secret Society of Comic Book Illuminati for being awesome and letting me throw up a link!  That means a lot to me.  Some neat stuff from Marvel this week.  The Miracleman hardcover has three covers which is cool/frustrating for purist collectors. I think I found all three covers but, the three artists, (Arthur Adams, John Totleben and Jim Cheung), have also done variants for individual issues by the looks of it so if one of them is wrong feel free to correct me and if you have the right pic - throw it up in the comments section!

AVENGERS: ULTRON UNBOUND

Want to feel like you're on the inside while you're watching the new Avengers?  Read this and you'll be the one leaning over and whispering, "he's not like in the books" or "they nailed him".  Or at least that's what I initially thought this would be.  Turns out it's actually an arc from the 90's that featured Ultron....trying to find love?  Ok.  I'm thoroughly surprised.  And I quote: 

"Which of the West Coast Avengers women will he take as the basis for his metallic mate, known as War Toy? As the Whackos regroup after a blistering assault, Ultron finds that the path of true love doesn't run smooth - even for ruthless robots." 

Huh, wonder if they'll use that in the movie?

STAR WARS LEGENDS - EPIC COLLECTION VOL. 1: THE EMPIRE

Holy crap crackers!  That's a lot of Star Wars comics, Batman!  Can't say I'm surprised that Disney is reprinting their new acquisitions through an old acquisition, makes sense.  The people who are happy with their original Dark Horse prints need not apply, but for anyone new to the galaxy far, far away or anyone who just wants to save some space on the shelf these volumes are great news.  And with splashy cover's by Alex Ross I'm sure your shelf would be happy to hold them.

SKULL THE SLAYER

There isn't as much in this as I thought there would be, (less than 200 pages), especially considering it's only $10 less then the almost 500 pages that's offered in the tome above.  At first I kind of laughed at the title, which sounds like a Kull The Conqueror knock off, (and, honestly, probably was), but then I saw the nice Gil Kane cover and noticed it was written by Marv Wolfman and figured it'd be worth a mention.  There's some burgeoning talent in it as it was the mid 70's and Wolfman had yet to throw the DC Universe into their first, and best, Crisis.

DC Pull List - Week of 01/04

If I was writing about the hardcovers I would definitely be highlighting Absolute Green Arrow by Kevin Smith.  I've always wanted to have his run on Green Arrow but haven't really felt like paying $60-70 a trade for the now out-of-print initial releases.  The price tag attached to the Absolute edition IS pretty hefty, (sitting at a cool $100), but at least that's hardcover, all of the issues that Smith wrote and probably every extra sketch or note that was penned while the creators worked on this originally. Getting these issues in trade would probably cost at least $100 if not way, way more and that's IF you were lucky enough to find used copies for cheap, (cheap being a relative $20-40).

DC Comics - Zero Year 

Haven't read the Zero Year storyline yet, (so no spoilers!), but it's good to know that when I do get those trades that I can add this one alongside.  This should probably read Zero Year - The Companion but for some reason they didn't label it as such.  These stories are all extra material, so to speak.  It details things that were going on with other heroes, (Green Arrow and Lantern, Superman, Flash etc.), while Batman was stepping up to get the power back in Gotham and shut down an out of control Riddler.  Some people don't like companions, and I understand why because they can sometimes add nothing that is necessary to know, but I enjoy getting vignettes that illuminate what else was going on in the larger DC Universe.

New Teen Titans Vol. 2

For those of you who didn't get the Omnibus' that were released in the past couple years, (I did and the first two are glorious; didn't get the third, heard there was a lot of skipped material - boo!), or for people who don't like reading massive tomes, DC is reprinting the classic Wolfman/Perez Teen Titans in convenient paperback format.  There was some great storytelling going on here and the art is detailed, kinetic and bursting with image yet remains clean and easy to look at.  Everybody who's in to costumed antics should check this out.  It's great.

Indie Pull List - Week of 01/04

Holy crap, everybody and then some is putting a book out this week!!  79 books!  79!!  It would have been more, (original count: 91!), but I went through the list and deleted a few misplaced items. Books of jazz photo's, (which would have been interesting to me on a different level), and a Direwolf statue that sounded pretty sweet; a couple of Star Wars poster books that I was indifferent to; a book about the history of toy merchandise which looked good and the list goes on.

But, I have culled the list of excess and from that leftover meat have chosen, maybe not the finest cuts, but some of the more interesting for sure. Before we continue to the main course shall we get the appetiser out of the way?

Elephantmen 2260 Vol. 2: The Red Queen 

I looked this up for more information and the product description might as well have been in a different language.  It talked specifics about character arcs developing and that's about it.  NO idea whatsoever what the overall plot or idea of this would be.  Something about preventing a hybrid child from being born.  So, maybe the Elephantmen in the title is literal?  The other weird thing was, Vol. 1 starts printing issues from #51 and on.  So, this is an ongoing series that changed up after 50 issues and did a bit of a re branding?  Really, I'm throwing this one up as more of a bait for some information then anything else.

World Trigger Vol. 5

I used to like this series a lot more then I do right now.  It used to be awesome, great shounen stuff, with humour that was actually funny and villains that were fantastic, yet defeatable.  They did an arc last year, (or at least I got the English translations last year) called "Full-Scale Invasion" that I thought was the best stuff that had happened and exactly where the book should be going.  Then that wrapped up and they just moved on to some kind of lame tournament as if the main villains hadn't just stepped things up in a MAJOR way.  It's still ok, just not what it should be, (kind of like when Bleach becomes mind numbing and you're just waiting and praying it gets better).

Groo Vs Conan 

I was playing music with some guys a month or so ago and we got talking about comics.  One of the guys asked me, very enthusiastically, if I read Conan comics.  Honestly, I kind of laughed before I said, "No, I've never read a Conan comic."  He proceeded to tell me that they were the best comics he's ever read.  I was a little surprised.  Not that there was Conan comics, per se, more that someone was THAT in to them.  They're "the best", apparently. So, when my eyes glanced across this title I figured, 'Sure, why not?  He's probably not the ONLY guy that thinks these are the greatest.'  Is he?

EDIT:  Ok.  Now that I've seen the cover - this is a joke, right?  I mean, Conan is going to level that dude.  Groo's an idiot. And the write up for the product listing actually says it's dumb.  Maybe this isn't the finest example of Conan's comic book greatness?

My Little Pony - Friends Forever Vol. 3

This one's for my daughter so that when she asks me why I don't write about pony's I can show her this and say, "I all ready did."  As far as shows about talking ponies and cutie marks go I can only assume there could be worse then this.  The animation is bright, the voice acting top notch, (especially the occasional turn by John De Lancie as Discord), and there's some occasional good jokes.  If the comic book has even half of that going for it I'm sure my daughter will be asking me to read it to her over and over and over and over and over and over

Marvel Pull List - Week of 01/04

Luckily Marvel made it easy this week by only putting out 2 trades because I have to make this quick. Have to go give a buddy a hand moving. I know, I know, incredibly selfless. 

1 out of the 2 trades being published is Avengers related and 5 of the 8 hardcovers are Avengers related so Marvel's making sure everybody has a chance to bone up before the new movie comes out. It's smart business, Marvel has been doing it for the few years that I've been looking in to this stuff and probably started doing it long before that.  Pretty soon we'll get a bunch of Ant-Man stuff and then whoever's movie comes next, (I don't try and keep up anymore.  I just wait for the inevitable influx of trailers and hype pieces just before the release and go, "Cool, guess so-and-so got a movie").

But enough of that nonsense.  Let's see if we can't race through this disclaimer business:

Avengers: Scarlet Witch By Dan Abnett And Andy Lanning

A collection of Scarlet Witch's various solo outings over the years for people to familarize themselves with Wanda Maximoff before she makes her big screen debut in Age of Ultron.  These kinds of collections are good for people who are curious about characters, but for people who worry about continuity they can sometimes be more of a hindrance as the stories contained within come from various years.  These books usually come out to capitalize off of some other project, like a movie or TV show.

Weirdworld Warriors Of Shadow Realm

So, I had to do a little looking around to see what this was.  It's an old fantasy series written by Doug Moench.  Moench has done some cool books for DC.  It'd be interesting to see how he does with classic fantasy.  This looks like a good book for anyone who had an interest in these stories as it looks like they were originally printed in a chaotic fashion.  The stories were collected in 5 different publications, some of which were listed as magazines and special issues, so I can't imagine collecting the original copies would be easy.

This is a multi-author, multi-artist, weekly adventures type series.  Every issue is a new story, by a new creative team.  I don't tend to enjoy this kind of thing.  It's not bad, a fun diversion, but I'm usually more into the books that have the big arcs and character development.

All-Star Western Vol. 6: End Of The Trail 

I've never read a Western comic, never had any desire, but I have read books written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and they both do an always solid, and sometimes fantastic, job at writing fast-paced, engaging stories. I believe this series was one of the more recent cancellations by DC which is good and bad.  On one hand it's nice to know there's a foreseeable end but on the other hand, if you're enjoying it, it won't last long. Either way, it looks like I'm going to be traveling to the old west with Jonah Hex at some point.

Just wanted to use this time to give a quick acknowledgement/thank you to the resources I use to cull my information from the vast jungle of this electronic spider's web.  I get my initial list of what's coming from the awesome people at Collected Comics Library.  They have a cool website devoted to all things comics and I highly recommend everybody go check them out.  Without their hard work I would have to do WAY more work on my own and that would suck.  After I get the list there's some various fact checking and image gathering that goes on and then I slap some sort of a rejoinder underneath the splashy cover pic and there you have it!

When did Dark Horse start publishing Archie books?  For some reason I think that's cool.  Anywho, let's move on to the assorted legalities that need to be cleared.

Twilight Zone Vol. 3: The Way Back

Between J. Michael Straczynski and the enduring appeal of the original TV Show I'm surprised there are only 3 volumes. This particular volume features a story about a whiskey soaked private detective, (is there any other kind?), who travels back in time to solve his last case. The Twilight Zone-y twist is: what will his actions in the past do to the present? Overall, not the most original territory, but it does sound like it would be an old Twilight Zone episode and, I can only assume, that's got to the be the point. Plus J. Michael is a solid writer who knows his way around all things geek. This new series should be fun.

UQ Holder! Vol. 4

I love UQ Holder! and it's author Ken Akamatsu. This is his psuedo, sort of, sequel to the amazing Mahou Sensei Negima! Akamatsu is very good at balancing all the elements that go in to good manga and not have any of them take over and tip the scales in to an illogical mess or an ecchi fuelled waste of time. This is the story of Tota Konoe who just wants to get to the top of the Mars Tower and be the best he can be. Through a series of events he becomes involved with a group of immortals called UQ Holder! Crazy good. Do yourself a favor and branch out.

Morning Glories Vol. 8

Spirit of honesty: I know nothing about this, but I have heard very good things anytime it is brought up and 8 volumes bodes well for the series being good.  I also didn't really want to just do two books when there was such a plethora to choose from.  From what I'm reading this actually sounds like it could have been a Japanese Manga.  Brilliant but troubled schoolkids, shadowy conspiracies, catholic uniforms, supernatural elements.  I don't know about you guys but all of that is getting me a little excited.  I'm going to have to put this on my radar.  If any of the aforementioned traits appeal to you, maybe you should to.

I saw a cover for a trade, Dead End Kids, where almost half the cover was Joss Whedon's name. White background, small drawing of a character, book name, other creators and 

!!JOSS WHEDON!! 

So, it's not too hard to figure out how this book got sold initially. Seems as if these kids are making a name for themselves as they've been around for a while and are now getting omnibus style treatment. Anyone who's read this blog more then once will know I have not read any of this, but I do love Joss's dialogue and characterization so I'm sure it's good. Brian K. Vaughn and some decent artist's are also attached to the series so that always helps keep things running smooth when Joss is off making movies and TV shows.

Amazing Spider-Man - Epic Collection Vol. 22: Round Robin

Not the greatest picture, I'll admit, but there was slim pickings for this cover, not sure why.  I do love these collections, old issues printed together in convenient volumes.  Omnibus', compendiums', collections, digests, whatever they want to call it, I'll love it.  Guest appearances abound, as you can see from the cover.  Iron Man, Black Panther, Ultron, Moon Knight, Punisher, Nova, Night Thrasher and Darkhawk are all listed in the description.  With all those guest appearances I'm not sure how Peter Parker is going to get any panel time!

Secret Avengers Vol. 2: The Labyrinth

I try not to do this too much, or will try not to in the future, but I'm going to throw the blurb up from the back of the book:

Sounds pretty jam packed but I can't help but get the feeling that in 5 issues things are going to be a little rushed or at least left open for further volumes. Definitely won't be a starting point book like some further-down-the-road volumes can be, but if you're all ready in to this you probably don't need me telling you anything about it.
